Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Joshua Quartin began training at age 5. Only four years later did he receive his junior black belt in Chinese Kenpo under Sifu Richard Begley; and, has since gone on to attain a first degree black belt. Wanting to branch out in his training methods and fighting styles, in 2003 he began training under Kioshi Arturo Espina in the art of Goju Ryu and now holds a second degree black belt in that style. In discussing the differences between Chinese Kenpo and Goju Ryu, Josh states, “I find Kenpo to have great fighting techniques and Goju has the nicer forms and better balance.”

Now at the age of 16 and weighing approximately 155 pounds, Josh has become the complete fighter, training 5 to 6 days a week. During the week, two days are spent strictly for fighting/kumite, while the others are for forms, techniques and weapons. Josh states, “I love all aspects of sport martial arts and try to train them all equally. Sword is obviously my favorite.”

Josh Quartin 1In training with weapons, Josh originally started competing with the bo staff but once he got his hands on the sword/katana, he never looked back. He likes to make his performances exciting by demonstrating constant speed and agility throughout the kata; “My power and determination definitely come through when I compete.” Joshua still trains with a multitude of weapons including the bo, nunchucks, kamas and sais.

In describing himself, Josh says, “I believe in being the best that I can in everything I try. I always try my hardest. I consider myself a really nice person who always tries to do the right thing. Most people tell me I’m nice, respectful and have a great sense of humor.” One of his favorite stories is from the Compete Nationals tournament in California, February 2007. He moved up to the 14-17 year old division for the first time and was a significant underdog. In the end, he was announced 14-17 Mens Extreme/Creative Weapons Black Belt Grand Champion.

Josh believes that a great martial artist is someone who remains open to and has a desire to keep learning. He has no one favorite martial artist, but the most influential one would be his first instructors, Sifu Richard Begley, who taught him what it took to be the best. His training philosophy is “listen and learn from others and TRAIN HARD” while his legacy is “if I can be the best, so can you!” Josh is an all-around athlete enjoying a multitude of sports that include snowboarding, swimming and playing basketball.  Josh also enjoys fishing, hanging out with his friends, and like many others his age…being on his computer.  You can follow Joshua’s continued success at www.joshuaquartin.com.
